CLTH at Courses for Horses

FAQs

The programme welcomes children and young people aged 5-25 years who have additional needs in the widest sense who would benefit from access to equine facilitated learning. Participants may include those with special educational needs, including social and emotional mental health needs, those who may be disengaged or excluded from education, those who are without a school place or are electively home educated and those who may have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences.

Here at CFH, we offer small groups of up to 3 in appropriate age groups, starting age 5.

For our primary school-aged children, sessions are conducted by a fully-qualified teacher.  We provide  a nurturing, supportive environment where, through horses and the natural environment, children can develop skills that they would not be able to gain in a traditional school situation.  All sessions are  linked to the national curriculum.

For our high-school aged participants, sessions are conducted by our equestrian instructors.  We offer hands-on, real life experience of horses, including riding.  The awards we offer as part of the programme are a gateway to the the British Horse Society professional pathway and the focus for this age group is on personal development.  We focus on key life skills such as :

  • Communication

  • Confidence

  • Teamwork

  • Building relationships

  • Perseverance

  • Responsibility

How many session per week can a participant attend?

The minimum is 1 and maximum is 3. Each session is 2.5 hours in duration.

What happens in school holidays?

If they attend as part of school provision, we generally operate on a termly basis.  For those home schooled, we offer holiday sessions as well.

How much does it cost and how is the scheme funded?

The cost for under 12s is £50.00 per session and for 12 upwards is £70.00 per session, which is payable monthly, in advance

Usually, funding is from the referral school, however, we can accept funding directly from the LEA, related charities or private individuals. There is some funding available from the BHS for participants who have tried to get funding elsewhere but have been unsuccessful.

Do you take people with Disabilities?

Yes, depending on the level of disability.  This is something we are happy to discuss in confidence prior to applying.

How do I apply to join the scheme?

The first step is to get in touch.  We can discuss the young person's needs and what availability we have before completing a referral form.
